South Africa:
The Challenge and Promise
of a Multicultural South Africa
Tentative travel dates- August 15- September 15, 2008
This program will consist of a
preparatory course in African Cultures IAS 210 offered Spring 2008 and a
4-week summer program that will examine the social/cultural history of South
Africa and the current efforts to create a democratic, multicultural nation.
Less than two decades ago, during the apartheid era, South Africa divided
its population into just four categories: Black; White; Colored and Asian.
At that time, Black South African languages lacked recognition. Today, South
Africa recognizes 11 official languages—one of many positive signs that
progress is being made.
Paris, France: Identity Crisis:
The Outsider in French Culture
Aug. 17th- Sept. 6th,
2008
The
program focuses on contemporary French literature (in English translation )
in its geographic, political, and social context. Specifically, the course
will examine what former French President Jacques Chirac has called a
national “crisis of identity” in French culture. As the population of North
African immigrants in France grows, especially in Paris, issues of identity
and multiculturalism have challenged traditional notions of what it means to
be “French.” For more information contact Dutch Henry at
