Economic Hardship

Practical Training

There are two types of off campus employment available to international students at Shoreline Community College.

1.) Economic Hardship- If you have been studying in the United States for at least 9 months and have passed at least 12 credits, you may be eligible to apply for permission to work off campus. This is for students who have had an unforeseen severe economic hardship. You will need to apply to immigration for permission to work of campus. As part of this you will also need to explain to immigration how your situation has changed. Please come meet with an International Programs staff member to find out what paperwork you will need to fill out.

2.) Optional Practical Training- Once you have completed your degree at Shoreline you may be eligible to apply for permission to work of campus. Please come meet with an advisor one quarter before you are graduating if you are interested.

Important Information for Students on OPT:

1. Requirement to Update Employment Information

Students on OPT are now required to provide information about their employment status. If you are employed please complete this OPT Employment Information form and return it to the International Programs office.  We will use the information to update your SEVIS record and keep you in good status! It is illegal for international students to work off campus without approval from immigration.

2. Requirement for Unemployment Period to Not Exceed 90 Days.

This is a new requirement. Students who are on OPT are not supposed to be unemployed for a period of more than 90 days. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet provided detailed instructions on how this information will be collected and how this requirement will be implemented. We will provide further information on our website when we receive further information.

3. Requirement to Update Home Address

This is not a new requirement. Like all F-1 students, students who are on OPT who move to a different address must provide their new address to International Programs within 10 days of the move. If you move, please complete the Change of Address form and return it to the International Programs office. (Contact information is provided at the bottom of the form).
